Bet you have already guessed our theme for last week!
We had a great time learning about Pioneers and the old West!
Pioneer Day Celebrations
We went to the annual party John's brother Sam hosts each year for the 24th of July. He invites about everyone he knows over for a potluck BBQ and fireworks show. His house is right behind the ball field where Logan City does the fireworks... so we are looking almost straight up at them! It is awesome.
American West Heritage Center
We went to the Heritage Center the day after Pioneer day to beat the crowds... Even though we missed the few extra events held on Pioneer day, it was worth it to be there with hardly anyone else - no crowds or lines! Our new friends the McKinnons joined us and we all had a really good time seeing first hand how the pioneers lived and survived. We have a lot of things so easy compared to them!

Pioneer style butter!
We talked about the different ways the pioneers had to do things because they couldn't just run to the grocery store whenever they needed or wanted something. We decided to make butter out of cream, just like they used to do. We used 2 cups of Whipping Cream sealed tight in a mason jar, then shake, shake, shake, shake, shake.... shake some more, and some more! After 20 -25 minutes of shaking, finally it separated - butter and buttermilk. Shake a little more to make it smooth, add 1/2 tsp salt to the butter, and ta da! Yummy Nummy Butter! (We think it tastes way better than store bought!)
