Living here out in the "country" we often pass farms on our way somewhere. But not living on a farm ourselves, I decided we could learn more about them, and actually visit one!
This week we enjoyed a few of the many books at our library about farms and farm animals. We also got creative with paper plates and popcicle sticks as we created a few of our favorite farm animal friends.
The highlight of this week was a trip to the farm of our friends the Coopers. Oh, and by the way... I think farmers work harder than anyone else I know! It is quite a chore to get 80-90 cows milked twice a day...every day! Also throw in taking care of the new calves, the pigs, the horses, the goat, and keeping track of all the farm cats together with their litters of farm kittens! WOW!
Jeff was so kind in letting us come and learn about farms. He talked to us and answered our questions, and we follwed him around as he did some of his chores. He was super patient about having a bunch of kids underfoot. We watched him give grain to the calves. We watched the cows file into the shed get hooked to the milking machines - and watched in wonder at the milk being pumped thru the tubes.
We watched him wrestle a calf born yesterday as he moved it away from the momma cows to be with the other calves.
We enjoyed watching the pigs (Zach's favorite), and even named them Oreo and Pinky.
We petted the goat (Quin's favorite), and checked out the horses.
The girls' favorite was the kittens.
The kids had a ball holding and cuddling the kittens, and of course there was some begging going on!
As a last hurrah, we got to help with one fun farm chore.
We got to feed three calves with bottles of fresh milk! Lucky us!
A farm takes hard work... and a few bumps and bruises sometimes too.
As soon as that calf was finished, that bottle flipped up and ricocheted off her head!
But even so, we all had a fun time down on the farm!
