Summer "Bees" Week

Since it worked so well for us last year, we are planning to celebrate our summer in the same fashion with each week revolving around a special theme.

Ready, Set, Go!

Our first week of summer was celebrated with "Bees" as the theme.  This week we enjoyed exploring many books from the library that talked about bees or honey.  Our craft day gave us a chance to make our own bee pocket buddies, and we enjoyed finger painting beautiful beehives!

We have some friends down the road who have started bee-keeping.  The were gracious hosts in letting us check out their setup and teaching us some of what they know about bees.  They have little viewer windows in the back of the hives so you can check out what the bees are doing after they all come back in the evenings.

Did you know that drone bees don't sting, and if you find one walking around the ground outside the hive, you can pick it up and let is crawl around your hand?  (The only ones we were able to find were dead, but it was still a cool experience to touch and feel and see them up close. The drones have bigger eyes.)

We also visited Cox Honeyland where we got to sample some of their yummy flavored honey sticks, and look at their special "view the bees" hive.  On one side you can see where they make the honeycomb, and the other side is where you see the nursery.  We even found the Queen!  Can you spot her?

To finish up our Bee week, we made honey caramel popcorn and watched the "Bee Movie".  What a buzzing good time we had this week.
