Summer Flashbacks!

Now that the summer is done and we are back in school, I thought it might be nice to do a summer review post.  This summer has been quite an adventure!

June:
The kids enjoyed the annual Wellsville Fishing Derby. Nobody won prizes this year, but they had a good time and caught some fish!

Quin had a good time playing Rookie Baseball, and learned how to hit a ball from a pitching machine.  His team this year was the Mets.

John rode his bicycle 92 miles, from SLC to Logan.  This was part of a program to promote Road Respect - Cars and Cyclists learning to share the road.  The weather turned a little nasty by the end of the day, but all did well, and had fun.

Zach, Quin and Sophie all took swimming lessons this summer.  A two week session in June, and we decided to do another session the end of July.  At the end of the second session, Sophie had mastered putting her face in the water, and both Quin and Zach were able to pass their sideline stroke class.

We enjoyed time with cousins Lyvia and Millie at the Hogle Zoo.  Grandma Jones and Bryttin were lots of fun too.  Our favorite thing was the bird show!

Lots of fun at the Jones Reunion - rubber boa snake, bike riding, tent sleeping, and forest exploring.  We also loved the last minute campground change...Logan Canyon's Lodge Campground was the best!  Fun skits and songs too... Grandma & Grandpa got slimed (almost) and for weeks we were all singing "Pinto Bean, Pinto Bean, Where O Where has Pinto Been?"

July:

We had a bumper crop of Raspberries this year, so many hours were spent Raspberry Picking!  We harvested over 100 pints of Raspberries!  That's a lot of Berries...we should go into business!

On July 4th, our next door neighbor's dog had puppies.  The kids even got to watch a few of them be born.  They begged every day for a month and a half to go and see the puppies, and have loved holding them and watching them grow.

The Powell Reunion was at Wasatch State Park this year.  There was lots fun planned for the kids and adults alike...crafts, bubble fun, bug catching contests, a visit to the Kennecott Copper Mine, and even a movie under the pavilion.

Heather and John were able to take their annual trip with friends to Island Park. Between Jen and babysitter Sierra, the kids were well taken care of. We enjoyed four-wheeling to Sawtelle Peak and Two Top.  We also had a great time fishing.  Heather and Melanie also walked to Big Springs and back - 8 miles!

August:
The kids must have gotten bored with mom's fun idea list, and made some of their own fun in the back yard.  We ended up with 3 big Mud Monsters!  Missed the best picture...you couldn't even tell that their underwear started out white!  I'm sure the neighbors got a good laugh cause Mom had quite the adventure trying to hose them off!!

It's all fun and games, until someone gets hurt.  On August 7th, after dinner, the kids were outside messing around on the little three foot slide.  We may never get the story straight, but Sophie broke her arm after either getting knocked off or falling off the slide.  Poor little thing!  Such a big owie on such a little girl!  But she was brave!  Luckily she got to sleep for a few minutes while they set the bone.  After the swelling went down, we traded the splint for a glow-in-the-dark sparkly cast!  Then two weeks later she got a bright pink waterproof cast!

We surprised the kids with a trip to Pickleville Playhouse to see the melodrama: "The hanging of El Bandito, Reimagined!" The boys were in heaven... "Oh ya...Dat just happened!"  Can't take a trip that close and not take a dip in Bear Lake and get raspberry shakes!

John took the boys for one last blast of fun before school started.  They went backpacking in the High Uintas near Naturalist Basin (northeast of Mirror Lake).  They had a good time fishing, hiking, and making noise with nobody else around to bother.  They even got a good soaking as they hiked out in the pouring rain!
