We checked out a book from the library that told us all about wood as a resource. We talked about how each year a tree trunk grows thicker by laying down a new layer of wood - So you can tell how old a tree is by counting the rings. A Visit to Country Lazer ... We know some people with a little shop by their house, and they can do amazing things with wood! We had a little visit with them and they showed us around and talked to us about the wood they use.
They showed us that they can use wood like pine (soft wood), or plywood that has layers to increase the strength of the wood. The kids were very interested, and listened intently.
We saw the lazer cutting machines (in action) that they use as a team with the computer to make their designs.
We also got to use the wood pieces they cut to make something useful. We made these little boxes by gluing the seams, then putting them together...like a puzzle!
We even got to help put our names into the computer, then watch them be lazered onto our boxes! We had a great time. Thank you Ruckers!
Super cool! Looks like a fun week and topic for the kids.
