Last weekend we had our Stake Conference. A few things from it have been on my mind a lot since then. There was a lot of discussion about the Atonement, and one talk in particular stuck out for me.
President Anderson talked about really using the Atonement. We should not be like the guy who bought the TV he had been longing for...then didn't want to wear it out so he put a sheet over it to save it for those special programs. We should "take the sheet off" the Atonement and use it every day, because it is not just for the big things or "the right moment"...it is also for the every day little things.
Think this way: "As you exercise the Atonement, how does it change how you interact with the people in your life?"
One of his examples was parenting.
Don't be more about the rule and discipline than the relationship!
1. Spend TIME to talk to your kids.
2. Stop worrying about embarrassment a child's wrong decision would bring...Worry more about the kid.
And the thing that hit home for me is this:
3. Put down things in the way of being there for your kids!
There is this Hymn that says it perfectly...#226 Improve the shining moments. Especially verse 2.
2. Time flies on wings of lightning;
We cannot call it back.
It comes, then passes forward
Along its onward track.
And if we are not mindful,
The chance will fade away,
For life is quick in passing.
’Tis as a single day.
I am determined..now more than ever..that I will "Improve the shining moments; Don’t let them pass you by. Work while the sun is radiant; Work, for the night draws nigh. We cannot bid the sunbeams To lengthen out their stay, Nor can we ask the shadow To ever stay away."
I will try to keep track of the "Shining Moments" to cherish.
